Eastern Cape launches province-wide under-15 league for boys and girls

The Eastern Cape Development League (ECDL) will begin play on Saturday 24 April 2027, bringing a full competitive season to under-15 footballers in all eight districts of the province — boys and girls alike.

The league is sanctioned under SAFA authority and delivered in partnership between the Great Africa Supporters Union and Eastern Cape football structures. Ninety-six teams will field squads of up to twenty-two players, with sixteen the minimum to register, giving more than 1 500 young people a season of real, scheduled football rather than an occasional tournament.

What makes it different

Youth football in South Africa is rich in talent and poor in structure. Children play, but often without a fixture list, without qualified officials, and without anyone keeping a record of what they did. The ECDL is built to close that gap.

Every district runs its own boys' and girls' division. Matches are played on Saturdays around the school calendar, with the June and October examination periods protected as hard blackout windows — no fixture may be scheduled inside them. Every ground is inspected and approved before a child is asked to travel to it. Every match is officiated by a SAFA-registered referee who has been police-cleared and checked against the National Child Protection Register.

Full kit — strip and boots — is issued to every registered player. For many, it will be the first kit that is genuinely their own.

Both divisions from the first whistle

Girls' football is not a second phase of this league. Each of the eight districts fields a girls' division alongside the boys' from day one, playing the same calendar, on the same grounds, with the same officials and the same published table.

One road out of eight districts

District champions and runners-up cross the province for a knockout bracket, ending in Grand Finals weekend in November 2027. Accredited scouts from professional clubs will be present — and that, rather than a one-day trial, is what a full season of recorded performance makes possible.

Safeguarding first

Participation in the league requires the consent of a parent or guardian, recorded and revocable at any time. Photographs, video, public player profiles and scouting visibility are each consented to separately, and a child whose parent has not consented does not appear publicly. No adult may hold a role in the league without a cleared police and child-protection check.
